Overview

Michael "Mike" Furey has a diverse practice, representing clients in commercial litigation and employment matters in federal and state courts. He has extensive appellate experience, having argued on many occasions before the New Jersey Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Mike's commercial litigation practice is expansive and includes disputes relating to business disputes, healthcare, partnerships, trade secrets and restrictive covenants. He regularly performs employment-related trial work and counseling for clients on discrimination, whistleblower and contract claims and issues. His practice, while primarily New Jersey-focused, has also taken him to other states to argue and try cases and counsel clients.

Additionally, Mike has represented attorneys and law firms in various types of disputes, including malpractice claims and claims relating to the withdrawal of an attorney from a firm. He also advises attorneys on ethics and professional responsibility issues, as well as attorney/client privilege issues.

Mike has compiled an impressive record with his own legal achievements and does extensive bar-related and community work.

Currently, he serves on the Lawyers Advisory Committee for the New Jersey Federal District Court. In addition, he was selected to serve on a Supreme Court committee to review proposed changes to the Rules on Professional Conduct. He is on the Board of Legal Services of New Jersey. For 15 years, he served on the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Disciplinary Oversight Committee, where he was the Chair. Mike has also served as President and Chair of the New Jersey Ballet and on the Board of the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Represents several hospitals in a suit against a healthcare insurer regarding the tiering of hospitals, that has been before the New Jersey Supreme Court on two occasions involving discovery issues and public’s right to access to court records

Obtained certification for a client from New Jersey Supreme Court on issue relating to medical expert testimony on subjective complaints of plaintiffs in personal injury litigation, and will argue the appeal

Represented a Fortune 100 retailer in class-action lawsuits in New Jersey, including one case where he argued the class certification issue before the New Jersey Supreme Court.

Tried a defamation action against a credit rating agency in Federal Court and obtained a directed verdict for the client at the end of the plaintiff's case.

Completed a 15-day arbitration hearing involving a dispute between shareholders raising governance, fiduciary duty and corporate opportunity issues.
