Exclusive: US Copyright Office Refuses AI-Assisted 'Derivative' Work
Day Pitney Intellectual Property Partner Alex P. Garens was featured in Managing IP article, "Exclusive: US Copyright Office Refuses AI-Assisted 'Derivative' Work," discussing the rejection of copyright protection for a work created by Ankit Sahni using the assistance of artificial intelligence-powered software tool.
Garens, head of the firm's Trademark, Copyright and Advertising practice group, commented, "If using such tools would deprive the creators of copyright protection, they will either not use the tools, hampering the creative process of the industry, or will continue to use them but without disclosing their use to the US Copyright Office, undermining the integrity of the entire registration system."
