Day Pitney LLP announced today that Michael G. Pfeifer has joined the firm as Of Counsel in the Individual Clients department in its Washington, DC office. Pfeifer joins from the DC office of Caplin & Drysdale, where he was a partner. His previous experience includes serving as Special Assistant to Associate Chief Counsel (International) of the Internal Revenue Service, where he assisted with drafting major international tax legislation.
"Michael is a renowned and talented lawyer who has deep experience handling a wide range of complex international tax matters, which will be of immediate value to our private clients in the DC Metro area and around the world," said Dane Dudley, chair of Day Pitney's Individual Clients department. Pfeifer's practice focuses on the international tax issues of wealthy individuals. He counsels clients on planning for pre-immigration and expatriation, as well as on structuring cross-border investments. In addition, Pfeifer advises high-net-worth individuals on estate planning matters, including the use of domestic and foreign trusts, and tax controversy matters, including Competent Authority and voluntary disclosure proceedings.
Pfeifer's professional affiliations include serving as Vice-Chair for the Mid-Atlantic Branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and he is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and an academician of The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law (TIAETL). He is a frequent lecturer on international tax topics before numerous U.S. and foreign professional associations, including ALI-CLE, for which he created and co-chaired an annual program on international trust and estate planning for 21 years. In addition, Pfeifer writes frequently on international tax matters and is quoted by various media outlets.
