Women's History Month - From Natural Rights to Positive Law: Exploring the Origins of Women's Equality in the Workplace
In recognition of Women’s History Month, Women Working Together (WWT®) hosted a thought-provoking program on March 4 featuring Jamie Rowen, Professor of Legal Studies and Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and founding director of the UMass Center for Justice, Law, and Societies.
Professor Rowen explored the long struggle to codify women’s rights, focusing on the often-misunderstood history behind the inclusion of “sex” in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. She examined the early work of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and highlighted the landmark moments, and the individual women, who helped transform abstract principles of equality into enforceable legal protections.
Presented live from our Hartford office, the program brought colleagues together across offices for an engaging and meaningful discussion in honor of Women’s History Month.
We thank Professor Rowen for sharing her insights and helping us reflect on the legal history that continues to shape the pursuit of equality today, and to WWT Co-Chairs Paty Durelli and Erin Healy for organizing this event.
