Joseph Scully is a litigator experienced in trying complex civil disputes. He has represented clients in courts throughout New England and other parts of the country including Delaware, Maryland, New York, Ohio and Texas. Joseph has taken several matters to trial in state and federal courts and has litigated numerous arbitrations through final hearings. He has handled appeals before a variety of courts including the First Circuit Court of Appeals and to state appellate courts in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island.
Joseph's practice focuses primarily on the representation of insurance companies in insurance coverage actions and reinsurance disputes. He has litigated various types of coverage disputes in state and federal courts, including disputes arising from asbestos and other product liability claims, environmental losses, fire and other property damage, construction defects, and equipment breakdown claims. Joseph also has handled and tried disputes involving reinsurance claims before arbitration panels and in various state and federal courts.
Joseph has extensive experience litigating trust and estate disputes. He has handled will contests, breach of contract claims, the defense and prosecution of breach of fiduciary claims, and disputes over land trusts. Joseph also has litigated product liability actions, commercial disputes, and corporate breach of fiduciary duty disputes.
Before entering private practice, Joseph served as law clerk for The Honorable Edward F. Harrington, U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Joseph is admitted to practice before the bars of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and Massachusetts. He has published a number of articles on legal topics and is a former member of the Board of Editors of Connecticut Supreme Court History, the journal of the Connecticut Supreme Court Historical Society. He serves on the board of the Greater Hartford Legal Aid Foundation.
Joseph is a native of Waterbury, Connecticut.

Pro bono representation of fair housing center seeking compensatory damages and injunctive relief arising from landlord's discriminatory rental practices
Represented ceding company against claims by its reinsurers that the cedent's post-settlement allocation of losses was done in bad faith for the purposes of maximizing reinsurance recoveries
Represented a variety of life and disability insurers against breach of contract and unfair claims practices claims
Represented healthcare company in connection with investigatory subpoenas from state regulators and the Connecticut Attorney General
Successfully defended national automotive distributor against breach of warranty and unfair trade practices claims, obtaining summary judgment
Obtained the dismissal of a product liability/failure to warn complaint against a pharmaceutical manufacturer on the basis that the warnings provided were adequate as a matter of law
Represented the estate of a pilot killed in an aircraft accident resulting from defective manufacturing of aircraft engine
Successfully defended probate estate in Massachusetts Superior Court against claims for breach of contract claim premised on testator's alleged failure to provide compensation in his will for past services rendered
Represented beneficiaries of a land trust against trustees for misappropriation of trust assets and other breach of fiduciary duties
