Day Pitney Expands Corporate Practice in New Jersey with Addition of Laurence Smith
Laurence M. Smith has joined Day Pitney LLP as a Corporate Partner in the firm's Corporate and Business Law department, resident in the Firm's New Jersey office. Before joining Day Pitney, Smith was the chair of the Corporate and Securities Department at Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC.
"The addition of Larry to our New Jersey office is the latest step in our firm's continued strategic growth in key areas of practice and in markets where we see significant growth potential to best serve our clients," commented Day Pitney Managing Partner Gregory A. Hayes. "In the last year, we have added ten lateral partners to the firm and nearly twenty attorneys to our Corporate department."
Smith has a broad-based transactional practice that includes mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and venture capital transactions; syndicated, middle-market, and asset-based loan transactions, as well as the purchase and sale of loans, workouts, and asset recovery matters; and real estate joint ventures. Smith has an expansive practice representing automobile dealers in acquisition and sale transactions, floor plan financings, real estate acquisitions and leases, franchise issues and disputes with auto manufacturers, and day-to-day contractual matters and litigation. Combining his experience as an outside general counsel with his focus on mergers and acquisitions and commercial finance transactions, Smith represents lenders and investors in the purchase and selling of distressed debt, often as a means of acquiring the company that issued the debt. He has also represented clients in bankruptcy.
"Larry is a highly skilled and seasoned corporate partner who will add substantial breadth and depth to our corporate capabilities," commented David Doyle, Partner and Executive Committee member. "His practice will offer numerous opportunities for our high net worth, commercial finance, corporate, and real estate clients."
"I am excited to be joining Day Pitney so that I can continue to grow my practice across the firm's footprint and also provide additional depth and breadth in strategic practice areas, including real estate, environmental, tax, trusts and estates, intellectual property and litigation across my client relationships," noted Smith.
Smith is a frequent contributor to legal publications. He is an active member of several organizations and associations, including the National Association of Dealer Counsel, the American Bar Association's Business Section, and the New Jersey State Bar Association. Smith earned his B.A., magna cum laude, from Yale University and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. He is admitted to practice in New Jersey and New York.
