Estate Planning Update July 2016 - Good News on Connecticut Probate Fees

As mentioned in our July 2015 Estate Planning Update, last year Connecticut substantially increased the probate fees for all Connecticut estates (regardless of whether probate proceedings are required). For example, an estate of $10 million would pay a probate fee of $45,615; an estate of $50 million would pay $245,615. In light of significant public concern, Connecticut recently enacted legislation capping the probate fee at $40,000, effective for decedents dying on or after July 1, 2016. The cap reduces fees on estates in excess of about $8.8 million.
