Revolutionizing Power Deployment: FERC's Push for Speed to Power in Large Load Integration
As growing data center and AI demand puts new pressure on the nation’s power grid, federal regulators are seeking to accelerate how large loads and the generation needed to serve them connect to the transmission system.
Energy lawyer Eric Runge spoke with Microgrid Knowledge about FERC’s June 18 show-cause orders and the agency’s proposed reforms addressing large-load interconnection, co-located and behind-the-meter generation, transmission service, and cost allocation. Runge explained that the reforms are intended to establish clearer tariff processes, prevent costs from being shifted from large-load customers to other customers, and enable faster pathways for generation dedicated to serving large loads.
“This is clearly a new phase for the integration of large loads and their co-located generation,” Runge said, noting that the process will move away from ad hoc arrangements toward clearer tariff rules and schedules designed to support rapid integration, appropriate cost allocation and operational reliability.
