Day Pitney's litigation practices in Connecticut and New Jersey have been recognized as "Highly Recommended" in the 2014 edition of Benchmark Litigation: The Definitive Guide to America's Leading Litigation Firms and Attorneys. Benchmark, which ranks firms and attorneys based on interviews with litigators and their clients over a six-month research period, notes that "Day Pitney contains some of the better litigators around."
In addition to receiving the top litigation ranking, 10 Day Pitney lawyers were also honored for their work as leading litigation practitioners in Connecticut and New Jersey. Lawyers interviewed by Benchmark described Day Pitney litigators as "a real go-to" in various commercial capacities. The publication highlighted Hartford-based partner Daniel FitzMaurice's successful representation of Day Pitney client Travelers Casualty in a series of lawsuits against its reinsurers arising from payments made by Travelers Casualty to or on behalf of two of its prominent asbestos defendant policyholders. These payments totaled many hundreds of millions of dollars (including a payment of $449 million) under a settlement agreement. Mr. FitzMaurice resolved all but one of the disputes. Benchmark also noted that managing partner Stanley Twardy, operating out of the Stamford office, is called "a standout" by peers, with one noting, "I've seen him in some white-collar and investigations work, and he's great with that."
In New Jersey, Benchmark singled out Benjamin Haglund as a "star litigator" in the product liability, commercial and shareholder practice and as a lawyer who elicits a healthy level of peer praise, noting that Mr. Haglund represents Deutsche Bank in over 340 toxic tort personal injury suits filed in the Southern District of New York arising from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Also mentioned was Anthony "Tony" Marchetta, whose diverse litigation practice balances trials and arbitrations, according to Benchmark. The publication highlighted Mr. Marchetta's recent engagement in an ICC arbitration, where he successfully represented a real estate developer and service provider in a contractual dispute regarding a golf club in Korea.
