Is More Affordable Housing Left To Novices?
What will it take to bring more affordable housing projects to market in South Florida?
In a recent Forbes article, Day Pitney Miami Land Use Partner Steven Wernick discusses how streamlining the approval process for qualifying affordable housing projects could help expand redevelopment opportunities. Citing Florida’s Infill Redevelopment Act, Wernick explains how replacing lengthy rezoning battles with a more predictable approval process could make former industrial sites, aging warehouses, brownfields and other underutilized properties viable for residential development in some of South Florida’s most supply-constrained markets.
For Wernick, the broader takeaway is clear: “The idea is that if housing is a statewide issue, it requires a more coordinated statewide solution rather than hundreds of different local approaches.”
