Individual Clients department partner G. Warren Whitaker looks at the difficult legal and financial environment for U.S. expatriates in an article for the April edition of Offshore Investment. He writes that "a number of reasons, more emotional than rational, and deeply rooted in American history and culture" have led to the current state of affairs, in which the tax code and public opinion unduly penalize those who move abroad. Warren goes on to write that "every human story is different, that some movement is inevitable in our increasingly mobile world, that personal preferences vary and change, and that vilification of the small group of people who will inevitably choose to leave this country every year is a sign of insecurity, rather than national confidence."
