"Guardianship & Supported Decision Making," Charles River Center Family Support Center
Day Pitney Partner Meredith H. Greene presented a webinar for members and families of the Charles River Center Family Support Center, which provides education, resources, and support to families raising children and adults with developmental disabilities.
The presentation examined the range of legal options available to support individuals with disabilities or diminished capacity, from guardianship and conservatorship to less restrictive alternatives such as supported decision-making, durable powers of attorney, health care proxies, and advocate appointments. Meredith discussed when guardianship may be appropriate, the legal standards and court procedures involved, the responsibilities of a guardian, and circumstances requiring additional court authorization. She also explored the growing role of supported decision-making as a person-centered approach that promotes autonomy while providing individuals with the support they need to make informed decisions when possible.
