Trump Remarks on Striking Cultural Sites in Iran Provoke Outrage

January 7, 2020

Steven Cash is quoted in an article, "Trump Remarks on Striking Cultural Sites in Iran Provoke Outrage," published by The Hill. The article focuses on recent statements made by President Trump about targeting Iranian cultural sites from a national security and foreign policy perspective. As reported, some legal experts argue the President would likely be violating international law, while others comment there is little administration officials could do if the President decides to take a step that is determined not to be in accordance with international rules.

"There's probably nothing they can do to prevent him as administration officials, other than persuasion. It's always been a question of whether and when a president in his Article II powers can essentially trump a treaty or even a law. That seems to be the position that he is taking," said Cash, who previously served as Senator Dianne Feinstein's designee on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and later as her Chief Counsel on the Judiciary Committee; he also served as both an Assistant General Counsel and Operations Officer with the CIA. "He's been pretty clear about his view: Under Article II, he can do what he wants," he continued, echoing Trump's remarks to a young conservatives summit last year.
