Senior counsel Cliff Nichols was quoted in an article, "Legal Research Tools Are Changing Law Practices—to a Point," published by ALM's LegalTech News. The article covers a panel discussion on the impact of advanced legal research tools at the International Legal Technology Association's ILTACON 2019 conference, where Nichols was a panelist.
As noted in the article, though modern legal research platforms leverage artificial intelligence (AI), many require humans to support the machine-powered analytics by manually curating knowledge. However, Nichols suggests this may be changing with newer legal research players like Casetext and ROSS, whose legal search platforms use AI to exclusively read and classify data. "It's actually reading the contents of the decision and classifying the decision based on their content rather than what a human did before," he said.
