Dennis Kearney was quoted in an article, "Menendez Trial To Test Line Between Friendship, Corruption," published in Law360. Kearney discussed how the friendship between Sen. Bob Menendez and Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen might be an important factor for the defense in their upcoming bribery trial, in which Menendez is accused of accepting private jet rides and other bribes from Melgen for his efforts to influence executive branch officials on Melgen's behalf. "I think it may be the only defense," Kearney told Law360. Kearney, a former prosecutor, added that the length of the defendants' relationship — which apparently started years before the alleged criminal activity — helps them. "The longer the friendship, the stronger the defense," Kearney said. However, Kearney added, the scope of the gifts in question weakens the argument that Menendez and Melgen were just friends and not engaged in a bribery scheme."It's an uphill battle because of the magnitude of these things," Kearney said.
