Law School committee recommends retiring current shield

Publisher: Harvard Law Today
March 4, 2016

Jim Bowers was mentioned in an article, "Law School committee recommends retiring current shield," in Harvard Law Today. Bowers is part of a committee, established this past November by Harvard Law School Dean Martha Minow, that was put together to evaluate whether the HLS shield — which is modeled on the family crest of an 18th century slaveholder and initial benefactor of the Law School — should be changed. The committee, which includes faculty, students, alumni and staff, recommended to the Harvard Corporation that the HLS shield be retired. Further, Dean Minow suggested that a symbol that more closely represents the values of the Law School be used instead.
