Day Pitney's Barbara Rosenthal Internship Expands for Third Summer
Day Pitney today announced it is accepting applications for its third annual Barbara Rosenthal Summer Internship Program. The program, which was named in memory of the firm's former executive director, provides an opportunity for minority students entering 11th or 12th grade in a local-area high school to experience working in a law firm during six weeks of the summer.
The program is being offered at two of Day Pitney's largest offices, Parsippany, NJ, and Hartford, CT. Qualified and motivated diverse students from Hartford- and Parsippany-area high schools are encouraged to apply.
The goal of the program is to prepare students for corporate and community leadership and provide a pipeline for minority students to enter the legal profession. Each intern has two mentors?-- a Director and a first-year attorney?-- who help the intern become acclimated, offer support and serve as a designated resource for any questions or issues that may arise.
The program has three components, starting with the research and writing of a memorandum on a specific issue of relevance to the firm. The students also work for two weeks in each of five administrative departments, monitored by that department's director: human resources; legal recruiting and diversity; professional development; finance; and firm administration. In addition, the interns have the opportunity to participate in internal firm meetings with the Day Pitney Summer Apprentices.
Rosenthal began her career at Day Pitney predecessor firm Day, Berry & Howard in the late 1970s, as director of human resources and assistant director of administration. In 1995 she was promoted to executive director. She acted as a consultant to the firm from 2001 until shortly before her death in 2007.
