Leiha Macauley Addresses Possible End of $5 Million Gift Tax Exemption in the New York Times

Publisher: New York Times
December 14, 2012

Boston-based trusts and estates partner Leiha Macauley was included in two New York Times articles on December 14 discussing several ways of handling large estate gifts in case the $5 million gift tax exemptions ends in 2013. In a Wealth Matters column titled, "A Proliferation of Ways to Use a Tax Break as Its End Nears," Leiha says that using the power of substitution allows assets to be exchanged for cash placed in trust, at a later date after the assets have been appraised. Other possible options are trusts that can be unwound until the end of the year, in case the exemption is extended or the tax eliminated, or placing money in a trust and taking a loan from it. Leiha was also featured in a Bucks column, "The Gift Tax and Other Tax Worries."
