Day Pitney Welcomes First Summer Apprentice Class
Day Pitney announced today the start of its first ever summer apprentice program.
The inaugural class is made up of nine summer apprentices in Hartford, CT and Florham Park, NJ. Each apprentice will spend eight weeks being mentored and trained by Day Pitney attorneys.
"We are excited to be welcoming our inaugural apprentice class," said Peter Wilson, Jr., the firm's Director of Diversity and Legal Recruiting. "This new program focuses on the key values that we stress for our attorneys - education, career development and the importance of working as a team?- and we look forward to feedback from our class."
The Day Pitney summer apprenticeship program is an eight-week course designed to prepare law students for the practice of law through practical, day-to-day applications and on-the-job training. Apprentices will learn by shadowing Day Pitney lawyers and working with firm professionals in one-on-one coaching scenarios. They will also collaborate with lawyer teams handling ongoing client matters. The practice-based learning approach is supplemented with focused training workshops and diversity and community service activities designed to teach law students about the firm's culture and key core values.
The program consists of two rotating four-week training courses in either distinct departments or combinations of complementary practice areas. As part of the curriculum, the apprentices will have the opportunity to work closely with a teams made up of partners, associates, and counsel specially chosen based upon experience, seniority, and effective mentoring skills.
The program focuses on four key areas:
Practice area training: Apprentices will get hands-on experience and exposure to substantive matters by working side-by-side with attorneys on active cases or transactions within assigned practice areas.
Core value training: Apprentices will be exposed to the firm's core values by participating in specially designed diversity and community service events and by working on pro bono projects.
Client development training: Apprentices will attend training designed to educate on client development and networking skills.
Law firm management and economics: Apprentices will develop an understanding of law firm economics and management, and learn how associates fit into the framework of developing a successful legal enterprise.
