On October 10, James Bowers will share his personal perspectives on the History of Slavery and Race in South Carolina at UConn School of Law. The event will examine the ideologies and the institutions that perpetuate racism in America. The speakers will focus special attention on South Carolina's complex history of justifying and expanding slavery, imposing Jim Crow laws and fostering racism. Bowers was among the students who integrated the University of South Carolina in the 1960s. He attended Harvard Law School and then returned to be the first African-American professor of law at the University of South Carolina.
