Best Practices for Appellate Judges

Chase Rogers, former Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, served as faculty at the New Appellate Judges Seminar, sponsored by the Institute of Judicial Administration (IJA) at New York University School of Law from July 15 – 20 in New York City. Since its inception in 1959, the IJA New Appellate Judges Seminars have been attended by appellate judges from virtually every state and federal appeals court. The seminar exposes recently-commissioned appellate judges to best practices in fundamental aspects of appellate judging, including appellate review, oral argument, statutory interpretation, decision-making, opinion writing, ethical issues, chambers management, and interpersonal and group dynamics.

Chief Justice Rogers' career in the judiciary has spanned over two decades, starting in January 1998 when she was sworn in as a Connecticut Superior Court judge. In March 2006, she was sworn in as an Appellate Court judge and a little over a year later, she was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court. Chief Justice Rogers joined Day Pitney LLP as a partner in March 2018 and currently serves as chair of the firm's Appellate Practice group.
