Peter Wilson Jr. recalls being skeptical about big law firm culture when he became an associate at Day, Berry & Howard nine years ago. His concerns mirrored those of many associates: He was worried about getting quality work and advancing into leadership positions.

But as a young black attorney, he also was concerned about who his mentors would be and whether he would be given the opportunity to become successful in the firm. Then a year or two later, he was asked to join the firm's hiring and diversity committees, and he got a true feel for the firm's attitude toward diversity.

"As a junior level associate of a law firm, to know that your opinion is valued meant a lot," said Wilson, who is now director of diversity and legal recruiting for the firm renamed Day Pitney. "That gave me energy to go out and recruit more minority leaders to the firm."

This spring, Day Pitney was the first law firm to receive the Edwin Archer Randolph Diversity Award from the Hartford-based Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity, which has been handing out the award for five years. The LCD was formed about 10 years ago with the goal of diversifying the legal community.
