For the second time in as many months Day Pitney was honored for the firm's diversity initiatives. On June 19 Day Pitney received the Spirit of Juneteenth Award at the Amistad Center For Art & Culture's 18th Annual Juneteenth Celebration, the largest multi-cultural event in the greater Hartford area.

The Executive Director of the Amistad Center, Olivia White, stated: "We are delighted that we will be able to recognize Day Pitney's continuous support of The Amistad Center and the larger Hartford community by awarding you the Spirit of Juneteenth Award."

Originally a celebration of the last American slaves in Texas to learn of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865, two years after enactment, Juneteenth has evolved to a broader recognition of freedom and achievement, and community and cultural contributions. "Day Pitney's generous support of The Amistad Center and your recognition of how we can partner to achieve mutual goals, and your important work to nurture a strong network of professional women in the area, among other contributions, make you a fine example of the spirit underlying our celebration," White added.

Day Pitney partner Shawn Wooden accepted the award on behalf of the firm. "I am very honored to accept this award on behalf of my firm," Wooden said. "For many years, Day Pitney has focused on diversity and has maintained its commitment to the community. And, we look forward to continuing to be at the forefront."

The award comes just a month after Day Pitney was presented with the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity 2009 Edwin Archer Randolph Diversity Award at a ceremony that also took place in Hartford. Prior award recipients have been individuals and Day Pitney is the first organization to be singled out for the honor. In recognition of the award, Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell issued a proclamation officially declaring May 6, 2009, to be "Day Pitney Day in the State of Connecticut."

The Edwin Archer Randolph Diversity Award is named for the Yale Law School graduate who was the first lawyer of color admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1880.
