Day Pitney announced today that two of its Hartford associates have been elected to key leadership positions in the Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association.
Rene Alejandro Ortega, an attorney in the Firm's Real Estate, Environmental, and Land Use practice, has taken over as the organization's new president. Albert Llosas Barrueco, an employment litigator, is the new treasurer. Both men said there were honored to be serving in such important roles and credited the firm for its support and strong commitment to diversity.
"It is an honor to be named president of the Connecticut Hispanic Bar Association and I hope to carry on the work this organization has been doing on behalf of the state's Hispanic attorneys," Mr. Ortega said. "I also want to thank Day Pitney for the firm's long-standing commitment to diversity and providing me with the opportunity to pursue such an important position."
Mr. Barrueco concurred. "I joined Day Pitney partly because of their strong commitment to minority attorneys and well-established history as a leader in diversity in Connecticut," Albert said. "I am proud to now personally contribute to this culture by serving, along with Rene and other Hispanic attorneys, as a leader in the CHBA."
The CHBA is an organization that includes attorneys, law students and paralegal members, as well as professors and members of the judiciary. The CHBA focuses on enhancing professional opportunities for Hispanic attorneys, serving as mentors to new lawyers and law students, and helping private and public legal employers achieve their diversity goals. The CHBA has undertaken substantial efforts to serve the bar and the Hispanic community in Connecticut, and is a member and supporter of the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity. Over the years the CHBA has awarded thousands of dollars in academic scholarships to law students.
The CHBA announcement comes just a month after the Firm was notified it would be receiving three diversity awards in Connecticut: The Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity presented its 2009 Edwin Archer Randolph Diversity Award to the Connecticut offices of Day Pitney on May 6. The Firm has also been told it will be honored for its diversity efforts by the Urban League and the Amistad Center for Art and Culture.
